Jaipur is the capital city of the north-western Indian state of Rajasthan and also the largest city in the state, both by area and by population. It also has the reputation for being the first “planned” city in the whole of India. The colour of the buildings in the city is mostly pink – this was done by the Maharaja of Jaipur in the late 19th century, to mark the symbol of hospitality in the city (pink has been considered to be symbolic of hospitality). Due to this dominance of pink coloured buildings all over, the city came to be known as “Pink city”.
